4. These alterations are annoying, but I presume
that their communication to me implies that the texts
are otherwise approved by the Chinese government.
5. Having reached this stage, I see no useful
comment for me to make beyond the fact that I like
none of the proposed amendments. I should be glad to
learn at your early convenience whether the texts, as
thus altered, have your concurrence, or in the contrary
event what precise phrases should be struck out, or
what inserted.
